Do Travel Advisors Charge Fees? What Siouxland Travelers Should Know
At Second Trip Travel, there are no planning fees on most vacation packages. Eligible bookings compensate the agency through the travel supplier. Some complex custom itineraries or air-only requests may have a separate fee, which is explained before you commit. The useful question is both what you will pay and what help you will receive.
Firsthand travel is part of the perspective Josh brings to vacation planning.
I’m Josh Westendorf, a Travel Advisor based in Sioux City. If you have never worked with an advisor, the payment arrangement can sound confusing: how can someone help plan your vacation without adding a planning charge? Here is how I explain it to travelers throughout Siouxland.
How does a travel advisor get paid?
For eligible reservations, hotels, cruise lines, tour operators, and other suppliers pay the agency a commission. That arrangement allows Second Trip Travel to provide planning help on most vacation packages without charging a separate planning fee.
Supplier compensation and the price of your vacation are different things. Your trip still includes the hotel, tickets, cruise fare, tours, and any extras you select. I explain the quoted price, inclusions, payment dates, and cancellation terms before booking.
Does booking through an advisor always cost the same as booking direct?
The honest comparison uses the same travel dates, travelers, room or cabin category, ticket type, and booking conditions. An online price can look lower because it excludes an item you wanted, includes a less flexible rate, or assumes a different occupancy.
Send me the offer you are considering. I can compare eligible options and explain the differences. Availability and supplier rules determine which rates and promotions can be booked; a blanket promise to beat every internet price would not be useful advice.
When might a planning fee apply?
A detailed custom itinerary can involve a different amount of work and a different supplier arrangement than a straightforward vacation package. Some air-only requests may also require a fee. The important part is knowing the scope and cost before you agree to proceed.
Ask these questions before hiring any advisor:
Is there a separate planning or booking fee for my request?
What work does that fee cover, and when is it due?
What happens if I change my dates or decide not to travel?
Which supplier cancellation or change charges could apply?
What do you receive when you work with me?
My job is to help turn a list of possibilities into a vacation that fits your priorities. That can mean comparing a Disney resort’s location with its price, choosing a Universal hotel around your park plans, or checking whether a river cruise includes the excursions and transfers you expected.
You approve the itinerary and booking terms. I help with questions about arrangements booked through Second Trip Travel, including communicating with suppliers about available changes. Refunds, credits, availability, and upgrades depend on the supplier’s rules.
A practical example: choosing a Universal hotel
Imagine a family deciding between a hotel near Epic Universe and a hotel with included Express benefits at the other two theme parks. Comparing nightly rates alone misses the decision. The right calculation includes which parks the family will visit, any separately purchased Express passes, and how much they value convenient breaks. That is a planning example, not a promise of a particular discount.

Quick answers about travel advisor fees
Does “no planning fee” mean my vacation is free?
No. You pay for the vacation and selected extras. It means the agency does not add a separate planning fee to an eligible package.
Can I ask for help before choosing a destination?
Yes. Share your interests, approximate budget, travel dates, and who is traveling. Those details give us a useful starting point.
Will I know about a separate fee before booking?
Yes. Any separate Second Trip Travel planning fee is explained before you commit.
